So true… I have been experimenting with something that may sound strange lately. I’ve always heard that it is useful to love and accept my body exactly as it is, and that has been an active practice towards which I have made a lot of progress. But lately, I’ve taken it one step further. I’ve been considering the relationship I have with my body, just like I would consider the relationship I have with another person. I listen to her. I honor her requests. I thank her. And then she supports me. When she is strong during my morning 5K’s, I thank her for her strength. When I’m recovering, I am still and listen to her answer when I ask her what she wants. And when I want to focus and I want health and I want peace, she supports me there, too. I realize how strange this may sound, but I think personifying is such a valuable technique to improving our relationship with ourselves, which is the most important relationship there is. Personify the voices in your head. Personify your body. Build relationships with them using the same skills you use to build relationships with other humans in your life.
